Student Leadership Projects

An overview of the projects I spearheaded or collaborated on during my time as Raritan Valley Community College Student Government Senator

Student Reporting Process Initiative

My first project as senator was to improve the incident reporting process. I had a professor making non-inclusive demands of students during testing, and I was exploring ways to report it. I was disappointed to find that the reporting form was hard to find and difficult to understand, and reached out to the VP of Student Affairs. We collaborated to host the form on different sites so students could find it, and changed the wording so that it was more clear and easier to use. Additionally, I created posters advertising the forms' existence, with a scannable QR code, to increase awareness of resources available to students.

Food Committee Co-Chair

I was appointed Food Committee co-chair at the start of my second term as Student Government senator. I oversaw summer planning of the projects we would take on over the course of the academic year so that we could enter each meeting with purpose. A food survey aimed at gathering qualitative data on how the cafeteria was falling expectations became my special project. I brought the idea for the survey to the school VP of Finance, who offered to co-sponsor the endeavor. With the administration’s backing, the committee created a draft of the survey that was finalized by the college. I helped use the results of that survey to help interview a potential vendor, who was chosen based on flexibility of menu and willingness to collaborate with cultural clubs. Outside of the food survey, I facilitated bi-weekly meetings of the food committee. I presented the progress of different projects, and encouraged group brainstorming sessions, using slides I created on Canva.

Achievement Center Liaison and Advocate

The Student Government serves all students, but the Achievement Center, a center for students with disabilities, often got forgotten in our initiatives. I took on the empty role of liaison to mend this gap, and serve the Achievement Center in whatever way I could. I had monthly meetings with the Achievement Center’s representative for a year and a half, gaining back trust and sharing resources. Together, we got the center a table at the fall and spring Involvement Fair, raising awareness of their place on campus. I also shared student life calendars, students with disabilities could join in campus events like the yearly Halloween bash and the non-alcoholic mixer nights.

I served as the main point of contact for the cultural clubs on campus. Through this role, I helped seven clubs book rooms for meetings, get catering for events, and resolve internal disputes. I also advocated to the administration the necessity of supporting these clubs as the political landscape became more and more turbulent. The Muslim Student Association in particular faced unacceptable harassment, and I had regular meetings with their advisor and president to discuss the situation, offer administrative insight, and brainstorm solutions.

Cultural Clubs Liaison

My first semester at RVCC, I applied for and was selected to serve on a commission analyzing the results of a previous campus wide survey. My role was to write a recommendation for improving campus experience for trans students, in collaboration with several other students and faculty members. That recommendation was sent to the president of the college.

President's Commission on DEI Contributor
Institutional Engagement (formerly DEI) Committee Student Representative

I offered a student perspective to the committee, sharing not just my own thoughts but also what I had heard from peers through my duties as senator. I brought news from the committee back to Student Government Association, who offered support for the projects the committee undertook.
